I used to love watching Roy Jones Jr in the ring. He was always entertaining to me and a natural at the sport. I haven’t watched him fight since he got knocked out twice in his last 2 fights. I mean they were both UGLY lights out knockouts. It was extremely brutal both times. I remember thinking this fighter really could die in the ring. He laid on the canvas out cold for an eternity before he regained consciousness.
I saw some boxing headlines tonight that he captured the IBC light heavyweight championship belt from an undefeated fighter I never heard of. Good for him. He is now calling Felix Trinidad out. I am sure he will out box him like Bernard Hopkins did. Those 2 fighters are on a higher level than most fighters. To be honest, I think Antonio Tarver just happened to have RJJ’s number. I didn’t really think Tarver was that good. He just happened to be RJJ’s kryptonite. After that loss, I think RJJ just doubted his abilities and hasn’t been the same. He is now 38 years old and not as fast as he used to be. He is definitely in great shape but the younger fighters nowadays all seem to be chiseled out. Also at this weight class, his power hasn’t carried. In the middleweight class, he was just heavy handed and powerful. But in the higher weight classes, these bigger guys are used to harder punches.
If we can only go back in time, and have RJJ not take that rematch fight against Tarver. I believe he would still be undefeated today. Unfortunately, he made a bad decision because he let Tarver get under his skin. That’s life. I think at this point, he is trying to recapture those old glory days that we all do when we get older. I don’t think he needs the money. I think he had many successful business ventures and different sources of money to keep him going till he is 100 years old. He didn’t lose it all like Mike Tyson.
If these two legends actually do get to fight, I think it will set up some good fights for them after to jump start their careers. I think Hopkins would love to rematch with RJJ. Right now, it seems all the former big names are looking for that one last big payday. I think the fight they would want, if they could make weight would be Oscar De La Hoya. He is associated with 10-20 million dollar paydays, won or lose. How does he do it! Very easy I think. He is just a positive guy with the right attitude and trying to keep the sport clean. Some say he is trying to clean the sport up through his Golden Boy promotions. I don’t think he will be able to wipe out all the scandalous things that happen, but I think he will definitely make a big difference for the future of the sport. He already has so far. I hope he decides to stay retired.
DLH really did fight well against the younger Floyd Mayweather, Jr. PBF’s own father thought DLH won it. That is probably just spite. I thought it was a close fight and that DLH actually could have won the fight if he just jabbed more often and consistently. All he had to do is box like Sugar Ray Leonard did against Marvin Hagler or Thomas Hearns. In my opinion, we all knew the PBF wasn’t going to KO DLH. PBF just doesn’t have that power. Really, DLH just needed to outbox the boxer.
As far as RJJ against Trinidad goes, I think RJJ will just be too big and strong against him like Hopkins was. If it does happen, I think RJJ will win by decision. I would prefer RJJ just retires because a third ko could be fatal. I am sure I am wrong. Maybe he has the juice back, but at 38 I just don’t think he can outbox father time.
