Windows Vista vs XP

I have an HP desktop with a 19 inch lcd monitor and have had it for about 2 years. I recently purchased a Gateway 17 inch laptop 4 months ago. I love buying computers. They just seem to get better every 3 months. A few years back when pentium kept coming out with new chips, I was wanting the next version. Pentium 1, 2, 3, 4. Now I am just confused about the stuff because they all seem to be good. The laptop has a dual core pizza chip or something like that.

Originally, I was excited about having my laptop. It was fully loaded with the vista premium operating system. You know the one that makes the screens do the aero flip. Woohoo, this is fun…. NOT. It was much faster than my old pentium 4 desktop. I like the idea of being able to close my laptop screen down when I was finish working with it. After the “new-ness” of it all wore off, I find myself using my desktop more than my new laptop. Part of it may be the operating system.

Windows xp works very well. I am happy with all the controls and what nots. With windows vista, I am use to it now, but many of my old programs just don’t seem to work. I don’t believe the vista versions of them are out yet. As you can see, it seems like you have to buy extra software for this new windows, just because it is not backwards compatible. Why?? Also, with vista I know it is suppose to be more secure, but really.. enough of the pop ups asking me if I really want to do what I just asked it to do. Are you sure you want to… ?? I know we can turn it off, but why have it as the default in the first place. It is annoying.

Microsoft doesn’t have to show us we are safe, just make it safe and let us trust you. I believe if a hacker wants to hack into a computer bad enough, he will get in. So the false sense of security really isn’t necessary. At least I dont think it is. Common sense is your best defense. Don’t fall for the Phishing emails that your ebay, paypal, or amazon account is suspended. You know perfectly well that if you log into those sites and tell them you want to spend my money, they will take it. Don’t open up emails from Nigerian strangers offering to buy whatever you are selling but wishing to give you more $$$ than what it is worth if you will cash a check for them.

If I had to do it all over again, I think I would have just purchased a big 32 inch lcd and an extra 2 gigs of ram. Seriously.

Incidentally, my desktop may have just died. I was trying to reformat it because my pc no longer was recognizing the DVD drive. I know it has something to do with the Bios but that is beyond the scope of my knowledge. I will have to bring it to my big brother. He is much better at this stuff than I am. He has basically without fail fixed every computer problem I have had in the past. He is kind of like a computer technician guru as far as I am concerned. Knowledge wise he comes close to being like Leo LaPorte on techtv. We will see if he can revive this old desktop of mine. If not, then I will definitely have to buy another computer. =)
