I saw this on the news and made me think back when I originally heard about this in the 2004 elections. I am too old for the draft, but it does make me sad that this will probably be re-instituted back in policy. I know that this war in Iraq has been straining our military. I also know that it is finally catching up and hurting our economy too. My understanding is we are spending over a billion dollars a day to support this effort. Now we will have to put the draft back into place because now our human resources are reaching capacity. I cut out the article from NBC website because it was short. I think these leaks are done on purpose to try to soften the blow when they make it official. Here is the article I read, but you can google it to find more news on this story.
A key member of the Bush administration dropped a bombshell Friday, suggesting the nation consider a return to a military draft. The White House’s new war adviser, Army Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute, said our nation’s all-volunteer force is reaching its limits due to multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“I think it makes sense to certainly consider it,” Army Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute said in an interview with National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.”"And I can tell you, this has always been an option on the table. But ultimately, this is a policy matter between meeting the demands for the nation’s security by one means or another,” Lute added in his first interview since he was confirmed by the Senate in June.Lute said the frequent deployments affect not only the troops but also their families who influence if service members “re-up.”Lute also suggested it may soon be necessary to draft soldiers to meet the demands for the nation’s security.President George W. Bush recently installed Lute as his main war adviser in May, giving him the responsibility to make sure efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan match with policies decided in Washington. He was chosen for the position after several retired generals turned it down.Bush has made it clear in the past that he doesn’t think a military draft is necessary. President Richard M. Nixon abolished the draft in 1973.There are approximately 95,000 uniformed military personnel assigned to a variety of commands and units in the San Diego area. Their dependents and families take the total military population in the county in the neighborhood of 175,000.
By the way, there is a new movie coming out that I want to see called “No End in Sight”. The trailer looks good and it got good reviews by the New York Times. If anyone has seen it, let me know what you thought of it.
