Just tv stuff and permalink error message

Well, the new TV season is almost here. I like to watch Grey’s Anatomy, the Bachelor, the Apprentice. One of favorite TV shows is Dexter on Showtime cable TV which also happens to have a new mma show coming up with some great showcase fighters. I just saw their preview show and it has Jake Shields and Nick Diaz competing in it. That will be great to watch them fight. I will probably watch Dancing With The Stars again this season. It has Floyd Mayweather JR, the boxer on it. I really thought Oscar DeLaHoya was eventually going to be on it. Maybe this is one of the benefits for winning their last fight with each other.

On my last post about permalinks, I tried to do it, but wordpress gave me a weird error message that I didn’t understand. I followed the instructions but ran into a message that wasn’t covered. I hope to fix this soon because I do see the benefits of making the links more explicit in descriptions. I will post the wordpress message I get so anyone out there can tell me what I should do.

If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it isn’t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file. Click in the field and press CTRL + a to select all.

This message popped up at the bottom of the screen and wouldn’t let me save my new options to have the permalinks show the title. After I did save and try to publish my last post, it originally came up as error 404 url not found. DOH!

For permalinks in Wordpress, you need to log into your server and look for a file called .htaccess. Then you need to change the permissions of that file so that the server can write to it. Scroll down to the htaccess directions on this page for more:

You need to check with your hosting provider if you can set up this type of file.
Easy way would be to go into your file manager.. Go to the root of your website and create a file called .htaccess and change the permissions to 777, then try again.
so, it’d be like the file was at http://www.totalnoid.com/.htaccess

I hope that makes sense, if you can’t create this type of file, then your hosting doesn’t allow it.

    Thank you Ellen and Tinu,

I am now reading the information. Apparently, I don’t have an .htaccess file on my server. I am trying to see if I can create it without messing up my template.

I appreciate both of your advice.

Speaking of, what did you think of the Mayweather-De La Hoya fight? Whom did you root for & whom did you really think was going to win before the fight started? (I was really excited to watch the fight, but was felt let-down as all of the hype didn’t seem to match the outcome. I was a bit disappointed in Oscar’s performance during the fight. I thought he was going to give Mayweather a better run for his money!)

Also, did you see the HBO documentary, “De La Hoya Mayweather, 24/7″? If so, what did you think of it? Do you think it portrayed Mayweather fairly/accurately? What do you think of him as a person/personality/boxing talent? what do you think about De La Hoya? I’m curious to hear what you think!

  5. CHESSNOID, September 2, 2007:

    Hi Cyberpenguin,
I was rooting for DeLaHoya in that fight, but I had expected Mayweather to win. DLH did better than I expected for his age and he has always had difficulty with faster opponents who have great stamina, like Sugar Shane Mosley. Mayweather is even faster than Mosley in my opinion. I think DLH actually had a chance to win but failed to utilize his best punch the jab. That usually sets up good combinations for him. A few rounds that he won was because of the jab and for some reason he didn’t execute that consistently in the match. I knew Mayweather wasn’t going to knock out DLH since he didn’t have that punching power at that higher weight class and always has problems breaking bones in his hands.

I did get a chance to see the 24/7 show. I think it was good and helps build the hype to get more people to want to buy the PPV. UFC does this with its spike tv reality show that leads into their UFC ppv show. I think that show portrayed them both well. I don’t like Mayweather as a person or his personality because he is arrogant and not humble at all. That of course comes from being so talented. Before Roy Jones Jr got knocked out cold twice, RJJ had that same confidence because he was undefeated and a natural. He was also arrogant, but I still liked to watch him fight. Lucky for Mayweather he retired because sooner or later someone better comes along or just has your number. I take that back, he is fighting Ricky Hatton who is also undefeated. I think all fighters have a puncher’s chance of winning. Hatton is pretty aggressive, but I don’t know if he will have the power in that weight class. Hatton does train hard so you never know.

There are a lot of great boxers out there that I personally don’t like as a person, but I can’t deny their talent. I like to watch great boxers regardless if they are jerks or not outside the ring. Mike Tyson is one of those fighters I enjoyed watching before he went to prison for rape. After he got out, he was never the same. Personally, I never liked him. Bernard Hopkins is another excellent fighter that is fighting beyond his prime and puts on a great show. I can’t say I like him either but I don respect his boxing ability. Lol.

One of the up and coming fighters I enjoy watching now is Miguel Cotto. He seems to be a very consistent fighter and puts on a great show. He put on a great show against Zab Judah.

The next fight I am looking forward to is the rematch between Manny Pacquiao vs Marco Antonio Barerra. I like both fighters and think Pacquiao should win. He seems to be having personal problems outside the ring, and the usually spells disaster inside the ring. Barrera is one of those crafty fighters who might be able to outbox him but I just don’t know if he can do it for 12 rounds at this stage of his career. Pacquiao has great stamina and just throws so many power punches. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is on steroids.

On another note, I will be watching Dancing with the Stars and Mayweather will be the boxer dancer this time. I think if he wants to improve his public image, this would be a good opportunity to make him more of a likable personality. I think he knows that and maybe one of the reasons he is doing the show.

Thanks for the comment. I love talking about boxing and mma. Did you think Mayweather was portrayed accurately? Who are your favorite fighters and are there any fights you are looking forward to?

    Hi Ellen and Tinu,

I do have an .htaccess file on my server. My wife found it for me. It was hidden for some unknown reason. I have installed it and it now works. Why is it women have all the answers. ;)

    Thanks again.
I appreciate both of your advice.

    Hi Chessnoid,

Thank you for your excellent, comprehensive reply to my comment on your post. Very well put & very interesting. Wow, you really know a lot about boxing & really follow the sport. A lot to comment on here…… I think my reply might end up being even longer than both your original post & both of our previous comments put together! ;-)

I have to admit that while I don’t watch a lot of televised sports, I will catch an especially intriguing boxing match, race, or other sports competition. And I do watch HBO Sports a lot. But that’s more about the people & situations surrounding sports than the actual sports themselves.

I play sports more than I watch them on TV. ;-) Are you an athlete as well as a sports fan? If so, what sports do you like to play &/or watch (other than boxing of course!)???

Now, to address your comments about the DLH/Mayweather match: I agree with what you said about the fight. So true what you wrote about the comparison of DLH & Mayweather’s abilities.

I was also rooting for DLH, & yet, also still thought Mayweather was going to win. There’s no question about it, DLH didn’t take his window of opportunity to get in more jabs, but I still think Mayweather’s age, abilities, & overall stamina put him at a great advantage.

I really enjoyed the 24/7 show as well. I think I even enjoyed it more than the fight itself! ;-) It really revealed a lot about the fighters themselves, and how different their approaches are to life, training, their careers, etc.

I liked the approach of HBO’s documentary: Simply put, it was a really well-told story about the training leading up to the fight. What I especially liked is that it made you feel like you weren’t watching TV in your living room, but rather were right there alongside them as a part of their training & their overall journey. I have to say I became very involved in the drama of it all. It was really exciting!

I love a good sports story, especially one that shows the gradual progression of athletes in their training. What really draws me in are the riveting personal stories & personalities surrounding the sport, whatever that sport might be. And of course, it’s great to watch the competition itself, to see the talent & how people face challenges.

Sports are so all-encompassing; when I think about sports, it’s not just merely a physical activity to me. I love seeing (& experiencing) the mental, emotional, & physical dimensions of training & competition. It’s really interesting to watch athlete’s varying attitudes & mental states throughout the process.

Speaking of which, I think DLH’s determination, persistence, and inner personal strength are truly admirable qualities. (BTW, he’s listed as one of my heroes on my MySpace page, http://myspace.com/ferlanti.) He obviously has a better handle on his public image than Mayweather, and doesn’t seem to fuel himself solely on rage like some other fighters out there. Also, to his credit, he seems to be a good person & a gentleman as well as a great athlete. (It seems like he took a few pages from Michael Jordan’s “book” on how to handle your career & image.) The “golden boy” is golden in more ways than one, & for this, he gets a lot of brownie points with the public & his adoring fans.

Regarding your comment about Mayweather being arrogant & how “that of course comes from being so talented.” I think it also comes from being a fighter & being talented. ;-) And perhaps from being young too. But it’s also a matter of personality. Some fighters are just cockier than others. ;-) Also, the sport itself does tend to bring out the cockier aspects in a person’s makeup… You could argue that it’s in a fighter’s DNA. ;-)

“There are a lot of great boxers out there that I personally don’t like as a person, but I can’t deny their talent.”–>Very true. The same could be said of artists & writers. Picasso, for example. Great artist, horrible person.

For some athletes, I think their “jerk” qualities can even make them more magnetic or newsworthy, like in Mayweather’s case: It’s part of his shtick! I think he likes being seen as the cocky, bad boy. It’s part of the hype & part of the show. And the HBO documentary definitely played up that aspect of him, as well as the personality “conflict” between the two.

“Did you think Mayweather was portrayed accurately?”–>It’s hard to really “know” a person or their true nature from their portrayal on TV. I’ve read & heard reports that Mayweather’s actually a nice person off-camera, and he has a good relationship with his wife & children, so who knows. It’s usually irrelevant to the fight itself, but then again, it doesn’t hurt your image if you think before you speak. ;-)

Yes, Mayweather definitely needs to improve his image & likeability. It’ll certainly be interesting to see what he does with his stint on Dancing with the Stars. He’s definitely not boring, that’s for sure. ;-)

I do think it’s possible as a professional athlete to be bold & speak your mind without being a jerk. There are/were a lot of sports personalities out there who embody this quality (i.e., Muhammed Ali, Arthur Ashe, Martina Navratilova, Charles Barkley, etc.). I think what many athletes have missed or forgotten about in the world of modern professional sports is the importance/value of sportsmanship-like conduct. ;-) It’s not some unattainable ideal. ;-)

Regarding your comment about Pacquiao (i.e., “He seems to be having personal problems outside the ring, and the usually spells disaster inside the ring.”), that’s an excellent point. Well said. Boxing takes so much focus & concentration. Being present & focused (as well as having a good training strategy) is half the battle right there.

Well have fun watching “Dancing with the Stars” & your other TV shows this season. I look forward to hearing more about your thoughts on these shows & other general topics, in future posts. And thanks for the well-wishes on my marathon training program!

It’s been great discussing all of these topics with you via your blog!

    Hi Cyberpenguin,
You could have been my guest blogger with that post. ;) I am very impressed with you passion for sports. I will be sure to follow up with more boxing posts. Have you seen UFC ultimate fighter on Spike TV. It is a reality show you might really enjoy because it is set up a little bit like the 24/7 show but they are 12 mma fighters living under one roof.
    Thanks for the feedback.
    Cheers!
    :)

Hope everyone was OK after the earthquake. (Lake Elsinore, that’s in Cali I believe.)

BTW, thanks for writing about boxing & tennis info in your most recent post! And also for the great show recommendation on Spike TV. I’ll have to check it out!

    Hey Cyberpenguin,
There will be a free UFC show this coming weekend. The main event will be pretty good to watch. Henderson vs Rampage. Hope you enjoy watching it. It’s not like boxing, but these guys are world level athletes.
