Message from George Carlin

Posted on Sep 24, 2007 by CHESSNOID in uncategorized | 30 Comments

Isn’t it amazing that George Carlin – comedian of the 70’s and 80’s – could write something so very eloquent…and so very appropriate.

A wonderful Message by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much , and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We have learned how to make a living, but not a life. We have added years to life not life to years. We have been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We have done larger things, but not better things.

We have cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We have conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We have learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one-night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete…

Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it does not cost a cent.

Remember, to say, “I love you” to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak! In addition, give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

If you do not send this to at least 8 people…Who cares?

**Postscript: Someone emailed that George Carlin may not be the author and the writer is anonymous. Regardless, it is beautiful, inspirational, and motivational. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. ;)

Hi YC, a comedian who usually uses alot of profanity in his routine. He may not be the true writer of this as some people have emailed me this is anonymous writer. I thought it was a good message.

George Carlin has always been profound and visionary in his comedy. The hilarity of his style is not jokes, but his wisdom and viewpoint in the everydayness of life. I’ve always loved him. Thanks for making me aware of this post.

There is a way to find out if it’s George Carlin’s work :). I am a HUGE fan of George Carlin…he’s always profoundly insightful. It’s a great thing to watch. I would credit him with this, seems at some point I’ve seen this in an act he’s done…I can almost recall the stage. It’s right on, like most every message he has.
Thanks for the heads up on this Chessnoid, it’s great..thanks for posting it.

    Hi Chessnoid,

    Nice one :)
Have come across similar things before but it’s very thought provoking and people should realise that they need to tell their loved ones that they do love them, there is no guarantee of a tomorrow for none of us knows what the future holds.

I wasn’t aware of that. Good to know. Thanks for you comment. I appreciate it.

  19. Amie, September 27, 2007:

According to Snopes.com, this piece was written by an extremely corrupt pastor named Bob Moorehead. (See http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/paradox.asp for more on that).

George Carlin himself calls the essay “a sappy load of shit”. He has a leangthy denial written on his website. It can be viewed at http://www.georgecarlin.com/home/dontblame.html . A slight scroll down will reveal his thoughts on “A Paradox of our Time”.

Point is, Carlin did not write this. You’d be wise to get your facts straight before simply posting the text of your favorite email forwards.

    Hi Amie,
Thanks for your comment, but it was already made known to me from previous emails. That is why I added a post script at the end of my blog entry. Regardless of who the author was, I still feel the message is important and the intent behind it to be positive and inspirational.

    It wasn’t him. For sure.

very nice. I’m not sure its actually George Carlin due to the lack of profanity and some of the references (prayer for example…he’s an atheist.)

  26. CHESSNOID, October 3, 2007:

    Hi anonymous,
Its not him but I really enjoyed the message. I updated the post with a post script at the end and commented too. I am happy just to pass on the message because it is positive one.
    Cheers!
