3 movies: The Vacancy, Death Proof, and After the Wedding + a ton of popcorn

Posted on Sep 29, 2007 by CHESSNOID in Uncategorized | 9 Comments

I got lucky and watched 3 good movies in a row. I know you are wondering when do I have time to do this while I am reading all these blogs. Well, it isn’t easy but I love to watch movies. The first movie was The Vacancy which stars Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson. I always thought she spelled her last name differently with a “d” in her last name. Anyways, I must say this is a good thriller type of movie. Both are actually good actors so I was surprised to see them in this type of movie. This starts off with Wilson’s character driving and getting lost because he tried to take a shortcut off the interstate. They wind up having to stay in an hotel. They begin watching a movie in their VCR and they witness people being brutally torchered in the film. What makes it scary is it happens in the same room they are staying in. YIKES! Don’t worry, I didn’t give up any spoilers. This is all in the trailer.

The second movie we watched was a Quentin Tarantino movie called Death Proof which actually has a ton of stars in it including the director himself. A few of the actors in this were Kurt Russell, Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Ferlito, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Tracie Thoms, Rose McGowan, Jordan Ladd, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and a whole lot more. This was actually a great action thriller type of movie. Russell is the bad guy and plays his character extremely well. Tarantino kind of makes this movie feel like it was shot from the 70’s. The movie delivers great acting, good character development even with so many of them, a unique plot, and of course and unbelievable ending. This is worth watching and another film I personally recommend.

The last movie we saw a foreign film called After the Wedding. I really liked this movie but the camera work was awful. If you are sensitive to camera movement similar to that of the Blair Witch Project movie, you may not be able to stomach this. I barely did, but it is worth watching. This is a a tear jerker chick flick that made even me cry. Unfortunately, I don’t know how to describe the movie without spoiling the plot. Keep in mind that this is a drama with subtitles before you decide to rent it.

After I finish this post I plan on watching another foreign comedy movie called The Valet. It is in French which is truly a language that my ears like. I hope one day to learn how to speak it. I think it is very sexy language. Bon Jour!

I’m a sucker for horror and Vacancy was actually not half bad. Both Wilson and Beckinsale did a fine job. A pity quite a number of reviews knocked it – I enjoyed it – a good watch to unwind on a weekend. Still to catch the Tarantino flick tho’ – I just hope there’s not too many things going at one time – something Tarantino likes to do sometimes.

    Hi YC,
Yeah, that Vacancy was definitely a good thriller. I think you will be pleased with Tarantino on this one. It is still a very busy movie, but he brings it all to an excellent conclusion. Did you like either Kill Bill 1 or 2?

Hey Chessnoid, I would classify Quentin’s “Death Proof” a chick flick instead of “After the Wedding”.

“Death Proof” surprised me in that I actually liked it. Coming from Tarantino, I was expecting a lot of camp n’ cheese. He did not disappoint. It’s got all those elements but it was also a LOT of FUN! (Not recommended for those that are sensitive to gore and violence.)

“After the Wedding” was a little slow to start but if you’re into good stories with multi-dimensional, well fleshed out characters, this is one I would recommend. I thought it was a very moving family drama. If I’m not mistaken, I think it won the Oscar for best Foreign Film, didn’t it?

P.S….Another plus for “After the Wedding” – they used some beautiful music for the soundtrack, including Sigur Ros (one of my faves), some with a bit of an Indian flavor, but all had a very soothing, ethereal quality which lends itself well to the landscapes, mood and storyline. :o)

    Hi Alss,
Thanks for the comments. I can’t recommend Death Proof as a chick flick movie because a whole lot of chicks will be mad at me because it really isn’t a tear jerker or romance type. At least I didn’t think so. When I think of chick flicks, I think of movies like the Notebook (I cried at that one) or any Jane Austen movie. Also, you are right that it was pretty violent and gorey. I forgot to mention that.
As for After the Wedding, it was nominated in 2006 but I did a quick search and it lost to a German movie titled The Lives of Others. I also saw that one and it was a good movie to watch that revolves around peoples lives just before the fall of the German wall. Back to After the Wedding, the music is beautiful like you said. In my opinion, this is a chick flick tear jerker. I guess it all comes down to what you think qualifies as a chick flick.

Do you have any other chick flick movies you could recommend watching?

  6. alilsumptinsumptin, September 30, 2007:

Hey Chess, I consider a “chick flick” to be any movie that appeals to women, not necessarily a sappy emotionally manipulative film or a cheesy romance. I dislike those. In my humble opinion, this Tarantino film definitely falls in the “chick flick” category because it has an action packed, white knuckle, laugh out loud ending that will make all women stand up n’ cheer and go *BOOYEAAA!* So, would you uhh mind passing me some of that popcorn? ;o)

    Hi ALSS,
You got me there. Technically, any movie could be a chick flick under your definition. I will have to agree with your description. I like Kill Bill 1 but not 2 so much. I think these would be considered chick flicks too, since most women would cheer for Uma beating up all the men.
Plenty of popcorn to go around.
    Thanks for your comment.
    Cheers!!

I hope you will like them. I think you will like Death Proof since you liked District 13. Those guys were actually amazing with their super agility. Also, Kill Bill 1 was pretty good too if you like karate action flicks.

I don’t mind subtitled movies. Especially the French ones. I love the way they speak French.

Do you have any other recommendations?
