Dancing with the Stars, Dexter, Californication, and the Bachelor.

Looks like Floyd Mayweather Jr was voted off Dancing with the Stars.  I am really surprised he lasted that long.  To me he looked very awkward when he danced.  I think many people had higher expectations because he is an athlete and in the previous season Leila Ali did great.  I am just glad he is no longer on the show.  Now he can concentrate on his boxing career. I think he will dominate Ricky Hatton.  Although, I am rooting for Hatton in this fight. I hope he gets a lucky hit and knocks out Mayweather. That would set up a superfight with Delayhoya vs Hatton next year.

One thing I noticed on this season’s show was everyone was really giving it alot more effort and seems even more competitive.  I am amazed with all the weight loss the celebrities seem to be dropping.  I want Helio to win, but I think Sabrina just has the biggest fan base to take her all the way to the end.

My other TV shows continue to keep me highly interested is Dexter and Californication.  Dexter is back to doing serial killing of killers.  The show has progressed that now his victims have been found and the police and FBI are actively trying to solve this case.  The whole set up is very good.  Each show is building momentum from the previous episode.  Californication on the other hand with Dave Duchovny is more of a relationships type of show.  It is definitely for adults only because of the themes, but really just fun to watch.  I was never an X-Files fan and his character here is so much different.  I think you will enjoy the show as much as I do.

The Bachelor show seems to be funnier than I remembered it. They used his twin brother a couple of episodes ago.  I think the new frontrunner is a girl named Jenny.  He seems to have a physical and sexual attraction towards her.  All the other girls are of course jealous.  I thought DeAnna might be the one he chooses at the end, but so far the only real interaction as far as real kissing is by Jenny.   Of course, the show is always trying to edit it in such a way you don’t get to see the more telling scenes.  I definitely think these 2 girls will make it to the last 3 fantasy dates.  I still have fun watching it.

Californication…GREAT SHOW. Dexter is good too and so is The Brotherhood and Weeds. I have to say SHO outclesses HBO IMHO. HBO tries to be too artsy and way out there. Altho I do love Larry David.

    Hi Gizmo,
Thanks for commenting. I think Showtime does have some great shows. Larry David is funny. I only learned recently he was also the writer for the Seinfeld show.
    Cheers!

    Hi Chessnoid,

Really enjoyed this post! And thanks for getting me into “Dancing With the Stars”! I’m certainly hooked now!

My other half thinks the show’s format is a tad bit cheesy, but I can’t help liking it in spite of the occasional corny comment from the announcers. I’ve always loved ballroom dancing & it’s especially exciting to watch the star’s progress from week to week!

It’s funny I felt the same way about Floyd & was making the same observations about his awkward dancing as well as the amazing weight loss of all the stars. Marie Osmond is looking particularly fabulous. Wow, what a transformation. She glows!

I thought Floyd handled himself pretty well. I thought it was nice that his partner said that she got to know the “real” Floyd, alluding to the contrast between his boxing image & the real person. Even though he wasn’t the most gifted of dancers, he did give it the ole’ collegiate try, & the exposure on the show will definitely help improve his overall image, as well as potentially give him a larger boxing audience.

I think the men, in general, aren’t as strong as the ladies, but I am impressed by their efforts. I think that sometimes they try “too hard.” Yes, dance is about technique, but it’s also about feeling the music. And many of those guys just don’t have a good sense of rhythm or timing. The obvious exception to this rule is Helio. He’s really amazing!

This might sound heartless (although it’s honestly not meant to be), but I think that Jane might be getting “sympathy” votes, due to her situation. She’s improved, but I still don’t think she’s as good as Melanie B or Sabrina.

Also, I didn’t think that Melanie B deserved to be in the red light with her partner, Maksim. They have chemistry & are really exciting to watch. A part of me also wondering what Floyd & Mel must’ve been thinking, as they were the only two black stars on the show & had both gotten the red light. Does this have something to do with the typical ballroom watching demographic? Or maybe their fan base just didn’t watch the show & call in? Or was it purely coincidental?!

Now, I felt that Floyd & Mark were the ones who really should’ve gotten the red light this time, but the fans’ votes are always going to be the wildcard that really tosses things up.

    Who do you like best?

I agree with you about Sabrina: I think that she also has an excellent chance of winning. Not only is her fan base strong, but she’s taken the competition to a whole new level. From what everyone’s saying on the show, it seems that this is the most exciting season yet. (I haven’t watched the earlier seasons, so I have nothing to compare it to in any case.)

Just one more observation: I’d prefer it if the stars would answer the questions more honestly, instead of B.S.’g or skipping over the answers like politicans. ;-) Atleast Bruno came out with a truthful answer when asked who the better dancer was (Floyd or Mel B)! Thank goodness, because the lovefest that’s going on on this show seems just a tad bit ersatz sometimes, eh?! I guess that’s part of showbiz…..

Oooh, got to check out Californication. Sounds interesting. What channel & time is that show on?!

Well, thanks again for an excellent post. I’ll check back in to see your reaction to next week’s episodes! ;-)

    Have a great week!

    Hi Cyberpenguin,

Thanks for the comment. I think I enjoy reading your replies as much as I like writing the posts. I agree with all your observations on Dancing with the Stars. I think you see everything the way I did.

I think Floyd just never loosened up in the show. He seemed to be in a boxer’s posture throughout the whole time he was there. I got a subtle vibe that his partner did not like him and that he was very difficult to work with. He was basically a diva. Or divo? lol.

My favorite is Helio from Brazil. He just has a great attitude and is very smooth on his feet. I don’t know if you agree with this, but I think it is more difficult for the men because they have to lead. When Wayne Newton danced, one of the judges pointed out the girl was doing the leading. I think the other guys that are left don’t have the same strong presence or confidence necessary to lead and win the whole competition.

I still think Sabrina is the fan’s favorite, and I agree Jane did get a lot of sympathy votes. I must say she does look elegant when she dances. As far as Mel B, I think she is doing great, but her fans don’t seem to be calling in. I was surprised to see her in the bottom two.

Californication is on Showtime cable and reruns play all the time. It usually has new shows on Monday nights at 9pm where I am at. The writing on that show is very witty. Tell me what you think of it. If you get Netflix, they have the season premier on their free on demand service.
    Cheers!

Thanks, Chessnoid! That’s very nice of you to say. I truly love reading what you write a great deal too!

Great observations in your above comments! Floyd did seem a tad bit “stiff” & hunched over at times. It seems he couldn’t overcome his boxer tendencies, which are so deeply ingrained after so many years of training. Like you, I was hoping he’d act like less of know-it-all, & listen more to what the judges had to say; he can be very obstinate & difficult at times. ;-) Which of course, was exactly what you’d picked up on, in his partner’s reactions. Very interesting how you picked up on these vibes. Too bad Floyd couldn’t have been a bit more sensitive to how she felt! ;-)

Great choice! Helio is fantastic! So much joy in his dancing. He’s full of life! And it goes without saying that his technique is superb.

I think you’ve got an excellent point about ballroom being more difficult for men, especially men who aren’t normally accustomed to dancing ballroom. It must be even harder for the male stars on this particular show, because they are working with professionals who’ve choreographed every move & have directed them for weeks! ;-) Suddenly, the male stars have to switch roles & be the ones in charge, mastering/memorizing not only their moves but also having enough confidence to surge ahead & lead their partners in front of an audience of millions. Some tough stuff!

Jane does look very elegant when she dances; I just don’t think she has enough variance in her repetoire, stylistically speaking. She’s kind of a one-note, always playing the elegance card. Now, her tango did have some spice to it, which shows growth, but then she returned to a safer choice the following week. The judges seem to reward the stars who do the unexpected, go against their natural grain to grow or take on new personae, or show the most contrast in their technique & stylistic range.

BTW, do you & your wife happen to ballroom dance together? You seem to know a lot about it, so I was just curious! 8-)

Erik & I are thinking about taking classes (or rather, I’m prodding him to ante up on his former promise to take classes together! ;-)). He thankfully likes to dance (unlike a lot of guys out there), but it’s going to take some convincing to get him into ballroom. We’re engaged, so it’s not like it won’t come in handy! ;-)

Thanks for the info re: Californication. Too bad I don’t get Showtime. Oh well, I’ll take your advice & just Netflix it. ;-) Enjoy the show; sounds great!

    Have a great night!

    Hi Cyberpenguin,
Thanks again for your comments. I really do appreciate your insight.
No, my wife and I don’t ballroom dance. Between her and me we have 4 left feet. However, I think it would be fun to try and learn. My parents actually liked to ballroom dance.
Good luck with Erik. I think once you both start those classes, you will both be dancing like the stars!
    Cheers!
