They have brand new desktop pcs that are green or environmentally friendly for only $199. I am really surprised that they could put one together this low. It does not have the microsoft windows operating system. It runs on linux which I don’t have any experience with but based on the reviews I read, I think I would be comfortable using it. I will probably go down to walmart and check it out and see how it feels. This doesn’t come with a monitor but I have that already from my previous system.
This is the system description:
Additional Preinstalled and Linked Software
Mozilla Firefox, gMail, Meebo, Skype, Wikipedia, GIMP, Blogger, YouTube, Xing Movie Player, Rhythmbox, Faqly, Facebook and OpenOffice.org 2.2 (includes WRITER, IMPRESS, DRAW, CALC, BASE)
Hardware Specifications
1.5GHz, VIA C7®-D Processor, 512MB DDR2 533MHz, SDRAM, 80GB Hard Disk Drive, DVD-ROM/D-RW Optical Drive, VIA UniChrome Pro IGP Graphics, Realtek 6-Channel Audio, (1) 10/100 Ethernet Port, (1) DB 15-Pin VGA Port, (6) USB 2.0 Ports, (1) RJ-11 Port, (1) Headphone/Line-Out Port, (2) Microphone/Line-In Ports, (1) Serial Port, (1) Parallel Port, (1) Keyboard, (1) Mouse, (1) Set of Amplified Stereo Speakers
I think this is a good deal and it isn’t even on sale. I think this will force the other manufacturers to lower their prices and make more green pcs in the future. On top of that, this makes the internet more accessible.

This is interesting
Quite cheap though..
Michael Woo’s last blog post..
Hi Michael Woo,
Very good price. I read you can still install windows xp on it if you don’t like the linux from someone who has purchased one.
Cheers!
It’s cheap as a base but you’ll eventually have to spend a little more to add on. But if you just need to use it to go online, surfing etc the general stuff - can be done, although I’m no hardware expert.
YC’s last blog post..How Much Is A Personal Blog Really Worth?
Hi YC,
Actually, this PC looks like it has all you need to have a good experience as long as you are not a gamer. I really am looking at buying this green pc.
I like linux more than I do Macs. I’m not that suprised that the price is that low of a linuxbox. They are not in demand as there is still a lot of software you can’t run on linux yet.
AntiBarbie’s last blog post..All I want for Christmas is a DVD.
Hi AntiBarbie,
What exactly do you like about linux and how does it compare to windows? Thanks for the insight.
Cheers!
i dont understand these people that think that there isnt that much software out there for linux. those are the ones that havent tried it yet and are going by “he said , she said.” i have had a linux box for 6 months now. and there is more software out there than i know what to do with. for one, did anyone ever tell you that linux is free? oh, but you would rather pay bill gates a premium for his inferior software. did it ever occur to you that the only worth of microsofts software is what he markets it to be. vista comes packaged in an attractive package, but its junk software. and it will never be better than what it already is, because he can continue to make more money off of you by selling you the software needed to keep the thing running without worrying about it crashing or getting that latest virus….oh, i dont worry about viruses either. in linux, programs neeed my permission to execute. the only thing windows has going for itself is that the software pretty much out of the box comes so that any moron can operate it without too much brain power. but you are stuck like chuck if you do have a serious problem. if i have a problem, i have the resourses of all the engineers and geeks all over the world who have posted fixes , line for line of how to fix the problem. i dont have to wait for the next update. i love linux because it gives me the freedom of choice to do with my computer as i wish, im not dictated what i must have. from my desktop to the running apps, sky’s the limit. and its my computer. with microsoft, under eula, you dont own a thing! you lease permission from bill gates to use your computer! and these are just some of the issues. so no one can come to me with that talk about issues with linux . i have more of an issue with a mega company that thinks it can bully me into buying crap, then using clever marketing to give me the illusion that its really worth 400.00 dollars, and be stuck with something that im sorry that i have. and have to spend more money to hopefully get it half running correctly. your choice. but i’ll stick with open source free software, you can spend your money on inferior software that you are at the mercy of. ……ubuntu rocks!
Hi Jace,
Thanks for the insight. You sound like you really appreciate this o/s. I will definitely check it out now.
Cheers!
If you guys keep buying at Walmart, your kids will end up being 40 and working for WM for peanuts! IS this what you want for your kids?
thebenjamins101.blogspot.com
Hi Arnold,
Just because you buy things at Walmart, it doesn’t mean your kids will work there. Nor does it mean if you buy coffee from Starbucks, your kids will work there. The post is not about Walmart, but the $199 computer.
Thanks for the comment.
I’ve been using Ubuntu exclusively on my laptop for the last month. Once I get my music collection off of NapsterToGo, it’ll be the only OS on my desktop too - it’s that good. I have more running on my laptop that I make use of on a daily basis on the laptop than I ever did on the desktop. I’ve been an open source fan for a few years now, and I am delighted to finally make the switch.
Kouros’s last blog post..A Question.
Hi Kouros,
Thanks for the comment. I appreciate your insight the easy usability on that OS. I will probably make the switch soon.
Cheers!
I’ve been using Ubuntu Linux exclusively for a long time now and I can honestly say I could never, ever go back to Windows!
Hi Anji,
I tried to buy one of these pc’s but they were sold out. I heard that an everex ubuntu o/s laptop version will be out next year. I am shooting for that.
Thanks for the comment.
Cheers!
