MMA update

I am reading crazy mma stuff on the internet. I heard that Mark Cuban is trying to get Floyd Mayweather, Jr to do an MMA fight on HDNET. They both met on Dancing with the Stars. I think PBF is considering it, but I don’t think he will have a chance with and fighter who has a decent wrestling or submissions background.  I remember in an old Pride FC they had Mike Tyson as a strong possibiltiy to fight in MMA.  One punch knock outs from him could of increased mma fan bases everywhere.  I sure do miss Pride FC promotions as they seem to have the best production.

The other crazy thing I read is that UFC turned down a joint venture with M-1 Global to co-promote a mega fight Fedor vs Randy. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t want to mingle with this up and coming organization like they were planning to do with Pride FC with Liddell vs Silva before they bought that company out.  Randy’s contract ends in October and that fight will happen sooner or later. Now it looks like later, but mma fans are not happy with the UFC ’s bad decision after bad decision. Business wise, it would make sense to get some money out of that event vs nothing which is what UFC will get once that show happens next year.

Big John McCarthy is leaving the UFC as a referee and going to the Fight Network as a commentator.  He has an interview in Sports Illustrated and actually gives a lot of insight. Check it out as I think it is a great read from someone who has been with the UFC since UFC 2.

First of all, frankly, Mayweather will have his ass kicked in mma, especially after slamming the sport. So much for being in the superior sport that he has to turn to one which he ridiculed.

Secondly, people are making too much of the UFC-Couture feud – no doubt he’s popular, but I think UFC will be able to create another poster boy, if not now, then in the future.

You’ve been with the UFC since UFC2 or you meant Big John?

    Hi YC,
Yeah Mayweather would probably not do well in the mma arena if wrestling would be allowed. He could only win if special rules were made for him.

UFC has already created many poster boys in other divisions, but keeps messing with fighters contracts. Arlovski is a great heavyweight fighter they have under contract but they wont let him fight again until he signs a new contract with them. I think that is one of the things fighters have consistently complained about. They are made to feel that they are being held ransom or blackmailed.
I meant Big John because I was quoting him. I am not John Chow who has tried to be in the UFC. I am just CHESSNOID who likes to watch MMA. ;)

If Mayweather fights with special rules, he’ll only be a temporary novelty – why watch exclusive boxing in the mma when you have better fighters beyond that and might as well stick to boxing. He’s just looking for a quick buck and the promoters who think of these things.

Hey I just saw an Arlovski interview – he’s the one with one fight left right? It was interesting as he sounded like he was frustrated but couldn’t do anything about it. I have read many such comments from other UFC fighters. But the problem is, they signed the contract. Now the best way to change this is for up and commers to refuse such terms and move to other promotions – otherwise UFC will continue to exploit this. This is actually something I like about M-1 – coupled with Cuban’s deep pockets, they might very well displace UFC very soon.

Maybe you should do a Chessnoid Xtreme Fights or something lol

I agree it would be a novelty and I don’t think Mayweather will like the atmosphere anyways.
Actually the fighters are honoring their contract. Arlovski is actually just trying to renew the terms of his new contract. While he and other fighters wait for UFC to negotiate terms, UFC holds off on letting them fight until the fighter signs a new contract with terms that may not be favorable to the fighter. Eventually, If Arlovski doesn’t fight and his UFC contract expires, I think more options will open up for him. Again, I think UFC is forgetting what really got them there in the first place.
I compare it to Google forgetting that there fortune was made by its users and not just the brilliance of their search engine programs. In theory, if all users worldwide agreed to use Yahoo just for one day, Google would collapse like a house of cards. Same thing with UFC, if every fan boycotted their next PPV, UFC could literally collapse because no one paid for the event. They would worry about the money they lost and would be afraid no one would buy their next PPV.
With all these organizations coming out with new events for free, UFC is starting to feel the heat. I doubt they will go out overnight, but if they don’t adapt to the market they could lose more money than they want. UFC may have been one of the first MMA venues, but they won’t be the last. 5 years ago, MSN, Yahoo, and AOL dominated the search engines. Google came blazing out of nowhere to capture the search engine and advertising market.

It takes alot of money and even more talent and promotion to make these events successful. You just have to remember who you are catering to and make them want to keep buying or using the service.

    Cheers! ;)
