I got to watch a wonderful and entertaining movie tonight. I thought it was a comedy which it was, but surprisingly it was also a drama. The characters were well developed and played by recognizable actors such as: Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer, Paul Schneider, Kelli Garner, and Patricia Clarkson. The plot seems simple enough and if you watch the trailer you might think it would be a great popcorn movie.

It is, but it delivers more than just an hour and a half of entertainment. There is a lot of symbolism in the movie with Goslings’ character’s personal history and his relationship with the sex doll. The sex doll allows him to emotionally mature in areas that were never developed when he was younger and deal with issues that he had bottled up and repressed for most of his life. In the end, he gets through it and everyone in the movie is a better person for helping him.

I love movies like this that can make me laugh and also give me hope and inspiration. Gosling delivers a believable performance of a person experiencing a temporary delusional mental illness. I also liked the fact that the town became a community in helping him.

My wife picked this movie and I must give her kudos for picking a winner. Kudos, Mrs. CHESSNOID. ;)
