Switching Webhost – issues

Posted on Jan 5, 2009 by CHESSNOID in Blogging, internet | 0 Comments

My blog was down for a few days because I had decided to transfer web hosts.  Originally I was with Verve hosting which has been extremely dependable for my needs.  There is one sharp gal there by the name of Christine that I correspond with by email whenever I have customer service needs and she always comes through.

The way this all started was I joined Project Payday which helps you make some extra money online.  It worked and I made a few hundred dollars using method 1 but I never graduated to method 2.  One of the offers I took up was web hosting for 2 years for $4 a month if you prepay it.  On top of that, this allowed me to get $70 from one of my sponsors.  In essence, I got paid $70 and bought 2 years web hosting  for $96 (puts me minus $26) which then allowed me to cancel my $60 a year verve web hosting ($120-$26 now puts me up a positive $94). ???I know that is hard to follow but that is how I justified it.

Webhostingpad is the hosting company I use and I am pretty happy with them so far. You can click on the link for the insane deal I got.

Now the story begins with me not really knowing anything about the technical stuff with Wordpress and php stuff.  The only thing I really know is how to blog.  My wife Mrs Chessnoid :smooch: handles that stuff for me. She did her due diligence by backing up my blog twice before beginning the transfer of web hosts.  She has upgraded my wordpress and changed my themes in the past, but this was the first time we changed web hosts.

After we received the backups, we canceled the Verve account.  There was some technical reason with the Domain thingy of why we had to cancel before uploading the backup to the new Webhostingpad account, but I really couldn’t explain it to you and have it make sense.  When we tried to restore the backup on the new host site, zilch. Doh!

We corresponded with both hosts and they both responded back appropriately.  In the end, what we came to realize is that both backups were “corrupt” and basically not usable.  We informed Verve of the situation, and Christine came up with the sql file of my posts, comments and other junk.  Then we forwarded that information to Niyas at
Webhostingpad who uploaded it and restored my blog.

The process could have been easier I think if the files weren’t corrupt. My wife felt bad for me even though she didn’t do anything wrong.  She had asked me what I was going to do if the files were just lost forever.  I told her I would just cut and paste all the old posts one by one.  Thank goodness it didn’t come to that.

First of all, thank you Mrs. Chessnoid for all your help and support which without this blog wouldn’t exist.  And thank you Christine at Verve who has consistently provided great customer service and Niyas who helped get restore my blog.  I will write a thank you email and forward them back to their supervisors to show my appreciation.
