Whenever we have unusual weather here in southern California like extreme heat after some cool temperatures, earthquakes seem to happen. Tonight at 8:40 we had a 5.0 shaker that seemed to last for 15 seconds centered near Lennox, CA. My mom actually lives near the epicenter. I called her and she said things fell of her shelf. Luckily nothing broke.
I think most long time California residents are used to the shaking so too many people panic. I live about 40 miles away in Irvine on the top floor of our apartment building. I think the shaking is magnified the higher up you live. Nothing broke in my home. Hopeully everyone is OK and that the aftershocks are not too bad.
