2009 going fast, California fires, True Blood, Contractors, and Mish Mash

This year seems to be going at a fast pace. 2009 will be here and gone faster than we know it. Summer is over but the heat is still loitering here. It should start cooling down soon.

The fires are still raging in California and the smoke is reaching Las Vegas, NV and as far as Boulder, CO. That is one big fire and they have satellite images showing the wind pushing the smoke in that direction. I do hope we have surprise rain to help the firefighters contain these blazes.

HBO’s True Blood seems to be building up to a good finale. I really like vampire themed shows and movies. Most times they are not good, but when you do find one that is good it is extremely enjoyable.

The US Tennis Open started yesterday and it seemed like the top players are all on their games. At least there is no upsets yet. The only top person that seemed to struggle was Serena from a recurring knee injury but she managed to pull through for a win. I hope she will be able to heal fast because it is more enjoyable to see all the top players playing their best. Just like in Wimbledon when Federer and Roddick had that amazing final that went for 5 hours.

Our first home improvement project is almost done and it is starting to look good. We took our time shopping for the right materials to minimize our costs. That worked out great and the internet just made it amazingly simple. The hard part was finding a contractor to get the job done.

I called about 6 contractors and spoke with 4 of them. 2 of them didn’t bother to return the calls but that could be because my project is a small one. 1 of them was unlicensed so he was out of the running to begin with. 2 of the remaining 3 came out to my place and gave me written quotes.

The one contractor that didn’t come out but said to shop around and he would beat the best quote. That sounds good, but he was too high in his over the phone quote, and seemed to come off racist on the phone claiming unlicensed immigrants were stealing his business. So those 2 characteristics of being lazy to come out and his blind racism put him out of the running.

Before I contracted with my final choice, I did go to the state contractors’ website to make sure he was legitimate and to see if there were any complaints or unresolved issues. That all checked out fine. Then I called his 3 references and they all came back positive.
