My friend and I were chatting about the recent mma activity. I think the low expectations on the free CBS Strikeforce event this last weekend made the show seem better than was expected. Even though they had Fedor headlining the show, only die hard mma fans would understand why he is so good. The other fights were decent, but nothing too exciting. The only other fight that was worthy was the Mousasi fight. The Shields vs Miller fight was too long for most. I really wished Miller finished the RNC that he locked in. I think Strikeforce needs to put Fedor, Cung Le, and Gina Carano all on fight card if they want to maximize their ratings and viewership.
I told him there is another UFC coming up this coming weekend and he said he felt like it is getting boring. I had to agree with him. It is on every week when you include the TUF shows. Even this coming free UFC 105 with Randy isn’t something that exciting because he has been beaten and simply getting old. The rest of the card looks decent. Then UFC 106 is up the following week. I usually don’t order the PPVs like my friend does, so I think that may factor in to the satisfaction factor of the shows.
All the UFC champs are sidelined right now. Brock, GSP, Machida, and Anderson all have illnesses, injuries or operations so none are expected to fight anytime soon. The fact that these champions all dominate their opponents for the most part make the fights kind of dull. There doesn’t seem to be any real challenger against Brock, GSP or Anderson. As far as Machida, I think many fans were very disappointed with his performance against Shogun.
My friend and I also discussed the actual PPV numbers. He asked me how many there were. I looked it up at MMA payout but really none of the numbers are confirmed because the UFC keeps those numbers private. I personally think the numbers are much lower and that the frequency of the shows are wearing out fans and their wallets. I think the UFC has saturated its name brand that many UFC fans are getting turned off and losing interest.
The free UFC 105 is this weekend. However, so is the the Manny Pacquiao vs Miguel Cotto fight. There is no denying for true fight fans that this show looks to be much more exciting.
