Great weekend of rain, movies, mma, and working out.

It rained very hard on Saturday all day long.  That is the perfect weather for my wife and me. We stayed in most of the day, but managed to take a nice morning walk.

The great thing is we watched 4-5 movies all in a row.  At this point we have watched 6 of the 10 Oscar nominated movies.  2 of those 6 movies were interesting to watch, but fails to deliver an overall good picture.  Quite honestly they are hyped up to be great movies, but I think they are movies that failed to live up to their potential.  You can read my film reviews at my movies blog.  One movie with major hype did love up to its expectations and potential.  The movie Avatar had great effects, good acting, and a decent storyline.  I think the animation technology they used was very impressive.  That was definitely a fun movie to watch.

I ate a lot of popcorn but don’t worry about me.  I went to the gym twice this week and had some great workouts.  My arms and back still hurt as I type this.  That’s actually a good thing.  They have one of those old scales in the gym and I had not weighed myself in a long time so I gave it a shot.  Amazingly enough I weighed the same as the last time and possibly less since I didn’t take my shoes off.  I have a phobia about germs and definitely avoid  taking my shoes off in public places.  That is one reason why I hate the airport security. Seriously, the government and people who believe this makes airport security more secure are both delusional and ignorant.

I did catch the last UFC and seriously have to say it was boring.  Trigg folded after one punch from Serra.  Coleman looked old as Couture dominated him.  I thought the only decent fight was Sonnen vs Marquardt. There is another UFC in 2 weeks.  I get the feeling their PPVs are down.  Even as they will probably say they had a record night or better than expected event,  we never know since they  don’t make their numbers public and when they do make them public it is unverifiable.

Some other good news I heard in regards to mma is that HDNET will now start airing live King of the Cage (KOTC) events next month.  For true mma fans this is another venue to watch more fighters.  I have to admit watching the UFC recycle fighters for purposes of trying to create a draw is boring.   I am talking about Coleman vs Couture, and Serra vs Trigg.  Those fights were boring and everyone knows it.  These fights make me more anxious to watch the upcoming boxing matches next month.

MMA Junkie:

Live monthly King of the Cage events are coming to HDNet.

The veteran mixed-martial-arts promotion, which has hosted hundreds of events around the globe, will begin airing monthly shows on the all-high-definition cable station next month as part of a three-year deal.

TV producer Mark Burnett, who owns part of KOTC, announced the partnership on Friday’s new edition of “Inside MMA.”

Burnett, who’s extensive reality-show resume has earned 51 Emmy Awards nominations with shows ranging from “Survivor” to “The Apprentice,” said the monthly events will be heavy on storylines. He, of course, is familiar with the concept when it comes to combat sports; his past projects have included the Jason “Mayhem” Miller-hosted “Bully Beatdown” on MTV and the popular boxing reality-competition show “The Contender.”

Burnett and KOTC primary owner Terry Trebilcock will now apply the formula to live event broadcasts.

HDNet’s first KOTC broadcast is a Feb. 12 “KOTC: Vengance” event that takes place at the Inn of the Mountain Gods Casino in Mescalero, N.M. Notable matchups include Rich Clementi vs. Anthony Lapsley, Travis Wiuff vs. Mike Kyle, and a trio of title fights.

It’s the first of 36 live broadcasts set to air on HDNet.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has also learned KOTC plans to host a March 26 event at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino in Reno. Assuming the Nevada State Athletic Commission approves the promotion’s request, that event will also air on HDNet.

Many notables have come through the KOTC ranks to find success on MMA’s biggest stages, including Diego Sanchez, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Urijah Faber, Joey Villasenor, Joe Stevenson and others. Many big names still compete in the organization, which launched in 1998.

KOTC is the latest promotion to strike a deal with HDNet, which previously has hosted shows from organizations such as Strikeforce, Affliction Entertainment, DREAM, World Victory Road, Adrenaline MMA and Xtreme Fighting Championships.
