Virgin Mobile’s LG Optimus V tether setup as a WiFi Hot Spot

This virgin mobile lg optimus v phone is very popular and seems to be sold out on the virgin mobile site, bestbuy, target and radio shack. All of them seem to have it on sale but not in stock. It would be a great idea to stock up on the items before they go on sale. Does everyone buy them up just to sell them on amazon and ebay?

Anyways, one of the reasons that this android phone appeals to me is the ability to tether without rooting. Here is a embedded video with the app demonstrating it.

Once using the the wifi and wifi hot spot, how well does a laptop using this signal perform? Is it enough to do basic internet searching for several hours at a time? I do not intend to use this phone for any major downloading/uploading. Will the speed comparable to 12mb dsl? Thanks for any feedback provided.

Hey John,
It doesn’t go anywhere near 12 MB dsl speeds as a tether wifi hotspot. It is accessing the 3g network, so it is more 1MB average and limited to how fast the 3g network sends the data. This is enough to check emails and surf the net but not enough to stream. Hope that helps.

No virgin mobile does not make you pay for tethering. It is an application included on the actual phone and just needs to be activated. They do make you pay for the data usage. In the video, the user states it is possibly against the TOS. I hope that helps.
