Virgin Mobile Lg optimus v tethering and wifi hotspots video

Posted on Mar 24, 2011 by CHESSNOID in Android, Cell phones, gadgets | 21 Comments

I have read alot of the forums on the net in my quest to maximize utility on my LG Optimus V android cell phone.  The most popular topic seems to be the tethering option on this phone.  A big plus is you don’t have to buy an app for it. The ability to tether on this phone is built in which means you can share your data connection if you like.  The other benefit is you do not have to root your phone so that is another step you don’t have to bother to learn.

I use the quick settings app to make it show up as a shortcut. It really is quite simple and only takes a quick minute to set it up. There are many videos out there to demonstrate how to do it . This is still my favorite one.

This does not work on the Virgin LG Optimus I bought last week. I installed Quick Settings as in the video, but there is no longer an wifi hotspot option in the Quick Settings menu.

    Hi Ron,
After you install quick settings you have to go into settings to move that option, to show that part in the application.

Go to quick settings widget>click manu key>click customize “customize”>then scroll down and drag wi-fi hotspot widget above the hidden settings line>click home key. Go back into quick settings widget and you will see the wi-fi hotspot now. It is not in the default settings when you first install this widget.
    Cheers!

??? I know this is the optimus v page but i was wondering if this would work on the triumph …

  10. CHESSNOID, July 7, 2011:

    Hi Eddie,
I would assume it would since it will be on the android 2.2 froyo o/s, but reading the forums some are speculating that the o/s may lock it down. We will know better once the phone comes out and someone can test it.
    Cheers!

thanks CHESSNOID … I have just one last question .. Should i go ahead and buy the optimus v or wait and buy the triumph … ???

  12. CHESSNOID, July 8, 2011:

    Hi Eddie,
It depends on your personal needs. If you have to have a larger screen and hdmi output for whatever reason, then you should wait. If those are not priority considerations, then I would recommend you buying the LG Optimus V
because it is a great value at only $120. I think based on how prices of cell phones seem to fall as newer ones come out, I would guess that the triumph might be only $150 in 6 months (after the new year).
So far I have been very satisfied with my LG phone and if you look at the reviews at amazon you will see many others are too. Thanks for stopping by and have an excellent weekend.

I’m having problems connecting to the internet with my Optimus. I installed the app and turned the hotspot on, my computer sees the hotspot and I can connect to it. However, When I try to go to surf the web, there is no connection. Does anyone else have this problem?

  14. CHESSNOID, July 23, 2011:

    Hi Dave,
Try setting a password on the hotspot, then try tethering entering the password to confirm the connection. Hope that helps.
    Cheers.

    Hiii,
Well I’m having a huge problem with my optimus v. I downloaded the QS app but when I tried connecting on to the wifi hotspot, I keep getting this error message “network unavailable” do you know why? What should I do?

  16. CHESSNOID, August 11, 2011:

    Hi Johnnycake,
First, I assume you have the data plan attached to your account. Once you turn the wifi hotspot on, then you just need to connect your laptop or device on to it. You should activate a password on the phone, then log your device onto the android wifi using the password. Hope that helps. Cheers!

Any idea why my mobile data disconects when I try to do this? I have tied a few programs now and the same thing happens all the time. I am conected to mobile data then try to turn hot spot, and the mobile data
    Turns off

  18. CHESSNOID, August 13, 2011:

    Hi Furnizzle,
I don’t know why your mobile data disconnects. That can be caused by the phone, the software, or the app you are using. If you have the LG Optimus V, the phone is built to function as a wifi hotspot with only an app to activate the program. The app is “quick setting” and I have personally tried it and it works without any problem. This post has the video demonstrating how to set up the wifi hot spot. Android phones and wifi hotspots
Hope that helps you. Cheers!

thank you Mr. Chessnoid. I had no clue how to turn on the wifi hotspot until you answered Ron’s question. you may want to update the tutorial with that info. cheers.
