This month marks the one year anniversary of my wife and I becoming whole food plant eaters aka vegan. Originally, we changed our lifestyle after watching the Earthlings video. Basically, this documentary was so moving for us that we decided to no longer support any of the industries that kill animals. It definitely had many challenges for us because you don’t realize that most processed foods have animal products in them.
With the internet, research was a breeze to avoid products that exploited animals. Changing our diets was also a challenge. We read a couple of books on it that opened up our eyes. The books I can recommend are The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted And the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss, And Long-term Health, Diet for a New America
, and Alicia Silverstone’s The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet
. My wife has read a ton more books but these are the recommended ones.
Most people think exercise is the solution to weight issues. However, that is not true. I have exercised all my life and still gained weight. I have tried a few diets to lose that weight which worked short term. Those diets always focused on calorie counting or portion control. This makes sense logically but it is not true. The real problem is consumption of animal products that poison your body.
I have lost about 35 pounds this past year and I am at my ideal weight. I literally eat as much as I want whenever I want. There is no calorie counting or portion control for me. My diet has a full menu and includes plant based everything. I even eat non-dairy ice cream that tastes delicious. Most importantly is my blood pressure is normal athlete level and my cholesterol is low. Everything I eat is literally healthy for my body.
There are a lot of people with health issues and honestly the doctors don’t treat the problems but just the symptoms. I think coronary heart disease is also a big issue that can be solved by going on a plant based food diet. This doctor Caldwell Esselstyn is one of the pioneers who shows it with an actual study. Caldwell Esselstyn, MD, chief of surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, discusses his 18-year study whereby he reversed severe heart disease in every patient in his program — who had all been sent home to die by their cardiologists. Dr. Esselstyn shows you how by changing your diet you can prevent and reverse heart disease. A low-fat plant-based diet is the key.
